The Philosophy

Put them on the spot, not on trial.

There's a line. On one end: “AI taught me.” On the other: “AI did it for me.” Every kid who used AI last night is somewhere on that line, and our job is to figure out where. A detector can't tell you. The kid can — if you put them on the spot and ask them to show you what they know.

The Problem

AI detection isn't evidence

I've watched a colleague accuse a kid on a Turnitin percentage. It went about how you'd expect. A detector hands you a number you can't defend to a parent, and every new model resets the arms race anyway. Here's what the research actually says:

  • 14 detectors tested — none reached 80% accuracy
  • Non-native English writers get flagged at alarming rates
  • OpenAI shut its own detector down. Vanderbilt turned Turnitin's off.
The Solution

Move the proof somewhere AI can't reach

So I stopped trying to catch AI and changed what I ask for. The writing that has to be theirs happens in class, in a locked window. A take-home paper earns a quiz written from that paper. Tests come in versions no two periods share. Nobody gets accused of anything — the assignment just doesn't need a detector.

I'm Ryan—a tech teacher in Utah, AI consultant on the side, and now the founder of RCNR AI.
